The Cost of Youth Sports

Registration is the number families quote each other, and it is rarely the number that matters. Ice or floor time, equipment a child outgrows in a season, tournament travel and hotels, and the private coaching added on top usually add up to several times the registration fee, and most of those line items are set by a league or a schedule rather than by the family.

RBC puts youth hockey at $4,478 to $7,371 per child per year in Canada, and over $10,000 at the AAA level. Over the same period, Canadian youth hockey participation has fallen by roughly a third, and cost is the reason named most often. That is the backdrop every Canadian sports family is making decisions against.
